Lawsuits may bring them around. The app Grindr was hit with one filed by it’s own former Chief Privacy Officer. If any site should have paid attention to privacy, it’s one that collects nude photos of its users – at least you don’t have to worry about that on Amazon.
The Federal Trade Commission is also looking into more of these situations and whether they constitute unfair and deceptive practices. Hopefully they’re not looking at the photos too.
To be fair, there is understandable confusion about what is and isn’t allowed. We are (hopefully) at the outset of a revolution in how our privacy is valued, that will result in the kinds of outlook changes that have already happened in Europe. But we see no evidence yet that privacy on the Internet is any more of a priority with public and private sector US entities than it was ten years ago.
