Judges, courts, police departments and healthcare providers expect results when they contract with an online privacy protection provider. They recognize the dangers of having personally identifiable information (PII) on their personnel easily available on thousands of websites, and expect the company they hire to address this serious issue.

To pay or not to pay – that is the question regarding ransomware attacks against municipal services. But if some states have their way, victims may no longer have a choice.

Two states – North Carolina and Florida – have passed legislation prohibiting public ransomware payments, and other states are considering similar measures. But it’s too early to tell yet whether such laws have had an impact. In the less than three years since the North Carolina bill passed, attacks have dipped slightly and still number in the hundreds.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that an alleged privacy protection provider called Onerep was playing fast and loose with the personal information of its clients.

In fact, the company’s owner had also launched dozens of people-search services over the years that sold people’s information, while Onerep charged those same people to have their content taken down.

A growing awareness of the need for online privacy protection has led several states to pass privacy legislation, and others where no law yet exists are introducing bills to address this issue.

Momentum has accelerated on these actions over the past two years. While there is still a long way to go before effective laws are in place in all 50 states, it now seems more likely than not that this will someday be the case.

The welcome trend toward laws regulating online consumer privacy continues into 2024 with new laws being proposed, and those already passed taking effect. Here is a brief rundown of what to expect as we enter the New Year.

States With New Privacy Laws

California

The state that set the standard for online privacy protection continues to bolster existing statutes with new restrictions.

It was the jump seen around the world.

Judges will be assigned to determine the fates of protestors on both sides – in a conflict that has caused centuries of violence and bloodshed.
